AWARDS
In South Africa, the
Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program will select six Global Leaders from the participating
universities. Global Leaders will receive their cash award and be invited to
attend an interview in South Africa in spring 2009. A selection
panel will interview the Global Leaders and select three to receive
an all-expense-paid trip to represent the group at the Global Leadership Institute in
New York City in July 2009.
The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders selected to attend
the Global Leadership Institute will participate in leadership training
and seminars on timely international issues. They will consult with renowned leaders
in the public, civic, and private sectors and build ties based on shared experiences
and common goals. Activities for participants will include various cultural events in New York City.
Global Leaders attending
the Leadership Institute will be responsible for communicating the essence of
the experience to the rest of the group.
PARTICIPATING UNIVERSITIES
Dr. Carol Allais conducts the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders competition in South Africa for IIE.
The following five institutions in South Africa have been invited to participate
in the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program this year:
- CIDA
- University of Cape Town
- University of KwaZulu-Natal
- University of the Western Cape
- University of the Witwatersrand
ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SOUTH AFRICA COMPETITION
Students MUST be nominated by their universities in order to apply for this
award. Each university will be asked to nominate a minimum of 5 and a
maximum of 10 candidates who meet the eligibility criteria outlined below. University
liaisons will submit a nomination form to Dr. Carol Allais on behalf of each nominated student.
The nomination deadline in South Africa is February 27, 2009.
Please note: only nominated second-year students from participating universities will be invited
to apply for this award in South Africa.
Only nominees will have access to the application; only those who meet the eligibility criteria described below will
be considered for the award. Nominees need not be a citizen of the country in which they are applying. Nominees must:
- have distinguished themselves as leaders in their
community or school.
- have high academic standing as demonstrated by grades
received in the first year of college or university. Eligible
candidates must have a minimum aggregate grade of A (equivalent to U.S. GPA of
3.4/4.0 or higher), or be in the top 10% of his/her class.
- be full-time students in the second
year of a university undergraduate degree program at one of the universities
invited to participate in the 2008-2009 program year.
- be pursuing their first undergraduate degree; all fields of study
accepted.
- demonstrate competency in spoken and written
English. Proficiency in English is necessary to participate fully in the Global
Leadership Institute.
IIE uses the following information to evaluate applicants and select the
Goldman Sachs Global Leaders:
- Electronic application and supporting documents
- Honors and awards
- Hobbies and extracurricular activities
- Community service and volunteer activities
- Personal Statement / Essay
COURSE OF ACTION FOR NOMINATED STUDENTS TO APPLY
Nominees must submit the following to Dr. Carol Allais by March 27, 2009.
- A printed electronic application. The application
must be completed and submitted online; a printed copy must also be sent to Dr. Carol Allais
with supporting documents.
- Undergraduate university transcripts (official record
of grades or marks)
- Secondary school transcripts (official record of
grades or marks)
- Two letters of recommendation. Recommenders
must use the required recommendation forms that are distributed to the nominee.
One recommendation should address the
nominee's leadership abilities and personal character; the second letter
should address the nominee's intellect and prospects for continued academic
success. At least one letter must come from a university faculty member. The other letter may come from another
university faculty member or an adult, non-family member who has supervised
the nominee's education, work, or other activities. If the nominee's first language is not English,
the letters should offer an assessment of his/her English language capabilities.

APPLICANT SELECTION PROCESS
Dr. Carol Allais will convene a selection panel to review complete and qualified
applications. They will evaluate the following qualities of the applicant:
- Academic achievement
- Leadership ability
- Potential for growth
- Communication skills
- Personal qualities or character
- References
COMPLETING AND SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION
After submitting the online application via the Internet, eligible nominees
must print the application and send it to Dr. Carol Allais. Please include copies of your university undergraduate transcripts
(official record of grades or marks), secondary school transcripts (official
record of grades or marks), two letters
of recommendation (please see above for specific recommendation requirements),
and your resume/curriculum vitae. Please send your printed application and
