1.
Eligibility
Selection
is based primarily on financial need, followed by merit.
Dependent children of regular full-time and part-time employees
who have a minimum of six months employment with the company
as of the application deadline date are eligible to apply
for scholarship assistance. Children of employees who hold
a title of vice president or higher are not eligible to
apply for these awards. Students who are currently enrolled
in post-secondary programs or will be enrolled before April
30, 2010 are eligible to apply. Official proof of
admission to a recognized educational institution is required
before a scholarship fund becomes available. All fields
of study are acceptable under these scholarships if offered
at recognized universities or vocational schools.
2.
Duration of Scholarship
Scholarships
may be renewed annually to the first degree sought by the
recipient provided that IIE is satisfied as to the recipient's
academic progress. Scholarships may be awarded for a maximum
of four years or until the first degree or certificate is
received, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent
upon the student maintaining satisfactory progress and full-time
enrollment. Continued parental employment at Mattel, Inc.
is required for renewal.
3.
Amount of Awards
There
will be different levels of awards ranging from US$500 to
$1,000. The amount of the award will be based on family
income, cost of living and tuition expenses. No award will
exceed the equivalent of US$1,000 in a 12-month period.
Applicants and officials at the institution where they expect
to study will be asked to provide IIE with estimates of
costs anticipated for a given academic year.
Awards
are for undergraduate study only. The award may be used
to pay for tuition, fees, books, supplies, room and board,
or other related educational expenses. Scholarship recipients
are responsible for the balance of funding, including tuition,
fees, books and supplies, living expenses, transportation,
etc.
4.
Payment of Awards
Scholarship
funds will be disbursed by IIE in one installment payable
in U.S. dollars directly to each scholarship grantee. The
conditions and payment schedule will be specified in a Letter
of Award prepared by IIE and sent to the grantee.
5.
Submission of Applications
The
applications must be completed in English, Chinese, Portuguese
or Spanish and sent to arrive by
registered mail, courier or online no later than
April 30, 2009 to: Mattel Global
Scholarship Program, Institute of International Education,
530 Bush Street, Suite 1000, San Francisco, California 94108
U.S.A. Applications must be accompanied by all required
and personal documentation available at the date of application.
IIE will acknowledge receipt of all applications. The appropriate
Human Resources representative will be asked to certify
that the applicant is the dependent child of an employee
of Mattel, Inc.
6.
Selection of Scholarship Recipients
IIE
will select successful scholarship recipients on the basis
of information contained in applications and accompanying
documentation. IIE may select scholarship recipients without
final evidence of acceptance by an educational institution,
although no award can take effect until such evidence is
presented. A scholarship recipient who is not able, within
a reasonable period of time, to produce such evidence satisfactorily
to IIE may be passed over in favor of an alternate candidate.
In no instance will personnel of Mattel, Inc., Mattel Children's
Foundation or any subsidiary participate in the selection
process.
The
number and size of awards granted is based on the number
of applications received and the funds available for scholarship
distribution.
7.
Notification of Selection Results
All
applicants will be notified of selection results by July
31, 2009.
