The Language Flagship

The Language Flagship leads the nation in designing, supporting, and implementing a new paradigm for advanced language education.  Through an innovative partnership between the federal government, education, and business, The Language Flagship seeks to graduate students who will take their place among the next generation of global professionals, commanding a superior level of fluency in one of many languages critical to U.S. competitiveness and security.

Flagship Programs with breakthrough methods of instruction at the advanced level in foreign language and culture are available in Arabic, Central Asian Turkic languages, Chinese, Eurasian languages, Hindi/Urdu, Korean, and Persian/Farsi.

For further information on The Language Flagship please visit  www.thelanguageflagship.org.

This year, Boren award recipients can use their awards to participate in the Chinese or Russian Overseas Flagship Programs only. We expect additional Flagship language programs to be available to Boren award recipients in future years.  To be eligible, applicants must possess a minimum level of proficiency of “Advanced” (ACTFL scale) / level 2 (ILR scale).

PLEASE NOTE:  Boren applicants to these overseas Language Flagships MUST obtain a separate admissions application from one of the Chinese or Russian Flagship Programs.  Awarding of Boren Scholarships and Fellowships for participation in The Language Flagship is contingent on admission to the Flagship Program of choice.  Again, please refer to www.thelanguageflagship.org for detailed information about programs under The Language Flagship.
