Children of Employee Scholarships
Scholarships for international employees' children and other family members are a key employee benefit that build staff loyalty, morale and retention while contributing to host-country goodwill. IIE develops and administers a range of these programs for corporations and corporate foundations. Each program is individually designed, and may include full or partial scholarship awards for study in the United States, the home country, or a third country for children of overseas-based employees or for overseas study by children of U.S.-based employees. Services provided by the Institute include publicity and recruitment, selection (including convening of impartial selection panels), evaluating financial need, awarding and administering scholarships, and monitoring scholarship winners.
Many companies already sponsor U.S.-based awards, such as National Merit Scholarships, for the children of their U.S. employees, but do not have awards for children of their overseas employees. IIE's experience of more than 80 years in international educational exchange offers companies a simple and proven method of designing and implementing international scholarships for children of employees. As the oldest and most experienced private, non-profit U.S. educational exchange organization [IRS 501 (c)(3)], IIE can assure companies that their international programs are soundly designed and professionally administered.
Corporate Benefits
Corporations offering international programs identify several benefits of the children of employee scholarships. They help companies to:
- Recruit and retain talented employees;
Achieve parity between benefits offered to U.S. and overseas staff;
Develop pools of skilled labor by expanding access to higher education for young people in target countries;
Offer scholarships which comply with U.S. private foundation tax exemption guidelines.

IIE can help tailor a program to a company's needs. IIE will design and produce brochures and application materials in whatever languages are required, and convene impartial selection panels to choose scholarship grantees. Since students from more than 120 countries have participated in programs by the Institute of International Education, IIE can evaluate the educational credentials for students from diverse backgrounds and educational systems. Once recipients are selected, IIE staff monitors their progress and continued eligibility, administers grant funds, and provides complete financial accounting.
