The Institute of International Education (IIE) is seeking interns for the IIE West Coast Region office. The internships will provide excellent learning opportunities for anyone interested in international education, policy, program management and non-profit organizations. An internship experience with IIE will provide an intern with a unique "behind the scenes" look at the operations of an international organization. Past IIE interns have gone on to work for organizations involved in study abroad, English language training, international student programs and other areas.
Position Descriptions
The Special Programs Intern will assist the staff of the West Coast Center with a variety of special programs, including dissemination of information on the Fulbright Graduate Program, the National Security Education Program, corporate programs and other opportunities managed by IIE. The intern will assist in database maintenance, mailings and follow-up. The intern will likely have the opportunity to be involved with professional training programs administered by IIE for international visitors.
The Educational Services Intern will assist the Educational Services staff with the administration of the Fulbright foreign student program. Duties will include data entry, student file maintenance, mailings, and other administrative duties. The intern will have the opportunity to learn about general international student services issues, the J-1 Exchange Visitor visa and grant administration procedures. The Educational Services intern will also have the opportunity to assist with other programs as time allows.
The Population Programs Intern will work with the Population Programs’ team on two exciting reproductive health/population programs. The intern will assist with the implementation and evaluation of the Leadership Development Mechanism (LDM) program, an international program to develop reproductive health and population leaders, as well as the implementation of a new research project, the Census of Human Capacity in Population. Duties will include LDM program participant support, internet/library research, data entry and database maintenance. This position will offer the intern an opportunity to learn more about global reproductive health and population issues.
The Corporate and New Programs Development Intern will assist mainly in new program development. The intern will research opportunities to serve new and existing corporate sponsors in international community outreach and employee benefits programs. The intern will also have the opportunity to assist with proposals for new programs and be a part of initial program development, as well as, existing sponsor outreach. Foreign language skills, especially Spanish or Arabic would be useful, but are not required.
The Institutional Development Intern will assist the staff by maintaining its donor database, helping with mailings and special fund-raising events. The intern will conduct research on possible donor foundations and corporations and help write grant proposals. The intern will also assist with increasing the visibility of IIE West Coast Region. This will include working on the IIE West Coast newsletter and brochure and helping to develop other special events.
All interns will help oversee the development and maintenance of IIE's resource library and advise students seeking information on international study, funding, work and volunteer opportunities. The positions also include general clerical duties such as answering phones, greeting visitors, and assisting with file maintenance. We are flexible and will try to assign projects and tasks in the areas of interest of interns. During the spring, the interns will assist staff in planning and preparing for the annual Fulbright Seminar.
Qualifications
The ideal intern candidate will be a student or recent graduate who possesses excellent communication skills and has an interest in a career in international education. Preference is given to individuals with study or living experience abroad and with demonstrated interest in international issues. The candidate should be well-organized, punctual, dependable, flexible, and very detail-oriented. Excellent computer skills are required. Computer and general training will be provided on an on-going basis as needed.

Time & Benefits
Interns usually work between 15-35 hours a week in the IIE office, at
agreed upon times. Although this is an unpaid internship, a small stipend
is available to cover the cost of transportation.
