To execute the Global Internship Program, IIE partners with a philanthropic partner and a local implementing nonprofit. Alcoa Foundation partners with IIE in Australia and the United States. Arconic Foundation partners with IIE in France, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Bellingham Technical College

Bellingham Technical College (BTC) is located in Whatcom County, a suburban/rural area in the northwest corner of Washington State. The county has an unemployment rate for youth and young adults of well over 10%. The college serves at least 750 students annually between the ages of 18 and 24, many of whom are first-time college students. Many of these students are from rural areas, recently graduated, dropped out of high school, or are entering BTC a few years after high school graduation. BTC’s manufacturing programs train youth with disabilities as well as those who are academically and economically disadvantaged. Nearly 80% of BTC’s full-time, program students qualify for federal or state financial aid. IIE and Alcoa Foundation partner with BTC to provide a customized workforce development and internship program for BTC students in its manufacturing programs.

Blount Partnership

The Blount Partnership is an economic development agency which represents the cities of Alcoa and Maryville in Blount County, Tennessee. The agency, which is funded by the three participating government entities, aims to bring investments to and create jobs in the area it serves. The youth unemployment rate in Blount county Tennessee is 24.2%. IIE and Arconic Foundation work with the Blount Partnership to provide a customized workforce development program for 45 unemployed youth. To deliver the program, the Blount Partnership collaborates with the Adult Education Foundation of Blount County.

Mission Locale Sarthe Nord

Mission Locale Sarthe Nord is a local extension of the national non-profit organization Mission Locale dedicated to providing access to training and jobs for unemployed young people in the northern section of the department of Sarthe in the Pays de la Loire region of northwestern France. Annually, Mission Locale Sarthe Nord provides services to more than 2,500 youth. While the general unemployment rate in Sarthe Nord is 10%, the youth unemployment rate in the area is 25%. IIE and Arconic Foundation partner with Mission Locale Sarthe Nord to provide a customized workforce development program for 50 unemployed youth.

Northern Futures - Geelong

Northern Futures is a non-governmental organization located in the city of Geelong, Australia. The organization is a collaborative partnership between members of the community including government, business, schools, and community groups who are working together to identify opportunities for improved economy, jobs, and education and training for the northern suburbs of Geelong. The unemployment rate in the northern suburbs of Geelong is 9.9%, which is almost double the 5.8% general unemployment rate in Australia. IIE and Alcoa Foundation partner with Northern Futures to provide a customized workforce development program to 20 unemployed young men and women from the northern suburbs of Geelong.

The Pump

The Pump is a British charity located in the Shard End area of Birmingham. It provides holistic and integrated services to disadvantaged young people in order to inspire and motivate them to be the best they can be. Almost 50% of the young people residing in Shard End are unemployed, out-of-school, and face barriers to finding employment due to inter-generational poverty and joblessness. IIE and Arconic Foundation partner with the Pump to provide a customized workforce development program to 40 unemployed young men and women from East Birmingham.
