The Lingnan Foundation, formerly the Trustees of Lingnan University, was first incorporated in the State of New York in 1893 to support the development of a college in Guangzhou, China, which later became Lingnan University. The Foundation's ties with institutions and educators in South China, cultivated over decades, are the basis for its programs. The Foundation seeks to draw upon its roots as an institution that incorporates both Chinese and American values and pedagogy and strives to be a catalyst for educational innovation and reform. The Lingnan Foundation's purpose is to contribute to the advancement of higher education in the historic Lingnan region of South China.
