The Institute of International Education hosted the Annual Best Practices in Internationalization Conference at IIE’s Headquarters on March 15-16, 2018. Leading experts in the field and the winners of the 2018 Andrew Heiskell Awards for Innovation in International Education  presented successful strategies and best practices on a range of themes in internationalizing higher education, including a new conference theme dedicated to internationalizing the professions.

Speakers and Presentations

Keynote speakers were Mariët Westermann, Executive Vice President for Programs and Research at Mellon Foundation, and Marianne Craven, Managing Director of Academic Programs in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.

The conference featured presentations by university provosts, deans, and government officials who shared their strategies and achievements for internationalizing their respective campuses. Winners of the 2018 IIE Andrew Heiskell Awards for Innovation in International Education discussed their programs, all of which contribute to the internationalization of higher education in the United States and abroad.

IIE Andrew Heiskell Award Winners

IIE presented the Andrew Heiskell Awards for 2018 to eight campuses, recognizing their outstanding initiatives. To date, the IIE Heiskell Awards have recognized over 130 innovative programs in international education. The goals of IIE’s Heiskell Awards are to foster innovative ideas that will help international education professionals create and sustain new opportunities for students and faculty; to bring international education to the forefront of education policy; and to stimulate public awareness of the benefits of international educational exchange.

Pre-Conference Roundtable Discussions

On March 15, IIE held a day of pre-conference roundtables on important current topics in international education.

These sessions included discussions on:

  • U.S. – China Higher Education Cooperation
  • Value of International Experience in the Contemporary Workplace
  • Academic Partnership Building in Challenging Environments
  • Getting ready for General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): Enhanced Privacy Rights for Exchange Students
  • Institutional Strategies for Attracting International Students: Exploring Best Practices and Future Collaboration.

Each session was moderated by an IIE representative, and included expert speakers on the topics and participants from all facets of the higher education community.
