Image: Betsy GlansAs Chief of IIE’s Institution and Participant Experience department, Betsy Glans serves as a member of IIE’s senior leadership team, which is responsible for articulating and building its vision and strategic plan. Ms. Glans has accountability for delivery of the services that IIE provides to participants and partner institutions on all its sponsored programs. The Department is comprised of three functionalized teams of over 200 team members in all U.S. offices, who manage over 150 programs for U.S. and foreign government agencies, corporations, foundations and other partners.  

Ms. Glans has worked at IIE in different capacities and times since 1987, with most of her experience being in the former Department of Student Exchanges.  She has extensive experience working with the major scholarship programs that IIE implements, such as the Fulbright Student and Scholar Programs, the National Security Education Programs, Brazil Scientific Mobility Program, among others. She has spent nine years living, working and studying in China, Singapore and Australia. Ms. Glans has a Master's in Public Administration from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs with a focus on nonprofit management. As part of that degree, in 1990-91, she spent a year pursuing graduate study in Mandarin Chinese at the Johns Hopkins University/Nanjing University Center for U.S. and Chinese Studies. More recently, while living in Australia, Ms. Glans pursued a Master's degree in Educational Administration at the University of New South Wales. Finally, she holds a bachelor degree in Chinese Studies from Wellesley College.
