From June 21-23, 2017 the Talloires Network Leaders Conference, hosted by the Universidad Veracruzana in the city of Xalapa, explored the theme of, “Social Responsibility and Human Dignity in Higher Education Engagement.” Close to 300 higher education leaders from over 30 countries from around the world gathered to discuss three sub-themes:
1) Access to education and the university’s responsibility to be socially inclusive and provide quality education to all
2) The university’s responsibility to provide Leadership opportunities and economic mobility to its students guaranteeing prosperous communities and societies and
3) Right to a Livelihood and the university’s responsibility to prepare people for employment, entrepreneurship and to contribute to economic development
Evelyn Torres, Deputy Director of Outreach & Scholarship from the IIE Office of Latin America & the Caribbean attended TNLC17 where she had the opportunity to interact with university officials and discuss the work that IIE does on a global scale by advancing scholarship, promoting access to opportunity and in turn helping to build economies of the many different countries that our work impacts on a day to day basis. A highlight of the conference was having the opportunity to interact with student leaders from around the world. 1/3 of the conference participants was made up of university students who had been selected by their universities as representatives for TNLC17.
