CUSP is designed to provide travel opportunities to students and scholars who do not otherwise have the rights to live and work in the destination country.  As such, applicants holding visas or other status that permits travel and employment in both China/Hong Kong SAR (China) and the U.S. are not eligible to apply.

China/Hong Kong SAR (China)-based applicants proposing projects in the U.S. are ineligible if:

  • They are citizens of the U.S.
  • They are permanent residents of the U.S.
  • They are currently residing in the U.S. on any visa type.

U.S.-based applicants proposing projects in China/Hong Kong SAR (China) are ineligible if:

  • They are citizens of China/Hong Kong SAR (China)
  • They are permanent residents of China/Hong Kong SAR (China)
  • They are currently residing in China/Hong Kong SAR on any visa type.

All China/Hong Kong SAR (China) applicants to the U.S. must be able to obtain a J-1 research scholar/professor visa under the sponsorship of IIE.
