2011 Heiskell Award Honorable Mention: Internationalizing the Community College
Nomination submitted by: James Goodwin, Director of Curriculum Development and Review
Program Overview
Genesee Community College in Batavia, New York offers a clinical exchange in nursing and science (medical pathology and biotechnology) with Southbank Institute of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. The exchange is the first of its kind in the New York, offering nursing and pathology students an opportunity to learn from real-world experience of health care as it is practiced in another nation. The program has already helped recent participants secure registered nurse positions at magnet hospitals in New York State.
Because of attention drawn to the nursing and science clinical exchange, interest in study abroad has been growing institution-wide. "Our relationships with international partners such as Brazil, Ireland, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic are strengthening," says Eunice M. Bellinger, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, "adding to a shared vision of our philosophy of providing international experiences to the student body, thus broadening their horizons."
