USAID Lotus Scholarship Program

Starting in 2014, the LOTUS Scholarship Program is part of the U.S.-Egypt Higher Education Initiative, a U.S. Government investment in Egypt’s future that provides educational opportunities for high-achieving Egyptians to learn skills that will better meet the needs of the 21st century economy. The Initiative encourages partnerships between Egyptian and American universities for knowledge transfer, research, and joint degree programs that reflect the needs of the modern economy in critical disciplines such as agribusiness, engineering, and entrepreneurship. It provides scholarships for talented young Egyptians – women and men from underserved communities in rural and urban areas – to Egyptian and American universities in fields that will help them reach their aspirations and contribute to Egypt’s economic prosperity.

The U.S.-Egypt Higher Education Initiative (HEI) LOTUS Scholarship Program seeks to offer comprehensive scholarships in 2014 to up to 50 talented and deserving Egyptian students to obtain undergraduate degrees from Egyptian private universities in fields of studies that are important to Egypt's current and future development. The U.S.-Egypt HEI LOTUS Scholarship Program aims to accomplish the following:

  • To identify and empower young women and men who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and involvement in their communities;
  • To give Egyptians students an opportunity to attend private universities that would normally be above their families’ financial means;
  • To develop and nurture the recipient’s leadership potentials, skills sets, commitment to community and country so that they are prepared and equipped to become future leaders and advocates for development in their local communities;
  • To enhance the recipients’ employability and career options; and
  • To create a network of youth nation-wide who are well educated and passionate about Egypt.

2014 U.S.-Egypt HEI LOTUS Scholarship recipients will attend a private university participating in the Program such as:

  • British University in Egypt (BUE) – Shorouk City
  • Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport – Alexandria

In 2010 and 2011 students were placed at the following universities:

  • Ahram Canadian University (ACU) – Sixth of October City
  • British University in Egypt (BUE) – Shorouk City
  • Future University in Egypt (FUE) – New Cairo
  • October University for Modern Sciences & Arts University (MSA) – Sixth of October City
