About The Global Leaders Program: Recognizing a compelling need for high-quality leaders led The Goldman Sachs Foundation to partner with the Institute of International Education in 2001 to create the Global Leaders Program. The program identifies students who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential and provides them with unique opportunities for leadership development. The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program identifies exceptional, second-year college students and provides them with training that will enhance their leadership abilities. The program provides young leaders with a unique international network through which they can share ideas, learn from established leaders, work collaboratively and address global challenges. By exposing participants to the complex issues and opportunities arising from an increasingly interdependent global economy, the program aims to expand perspectives and enhance skills critical for leadership in a changing world.
Each year 150 students are selected from close to 100 top universities and colleges in 19 countries. Each student is awarded US$3,000, and given the title of Goldman Sachs Global Leader. To become a Goldman Sachs Global Leader a student must be nominated by his/her university. Once nominated, the student submits an application to IIE. Panels within each region review all applications and select the final 150 student winners.
Through personal interviews, seventy-five students are then selected to represent the group at the annual Global Leadership Institute in New York. At the Institute, students participate in leadership training and seminars on timely international issues. They consult with renowned leaders in the public, civic, academic, and private sectors and build ties among themselves on shared experiences and common goals.
Global Leadership Institute Faculty: To date, more than 250 renowned leaders from a broad range of disciplines have taught at the Global Leadership Institute. These experts have engaged the Global Leaders in meaningful dialogues about critical global issues such as Globalization, Global Crisis Management, Developing Creative Tools for Environmental Change, and Leading with Innovation, Inspiration, Integrity and Impact. They also share their personal paths to leadership as well as their unique global perspectives.
Institute faculty has featured outstanding speakers such as former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan; Pauline Neville-Jones, former advisor to British PM John Major, now a Governor of the BBC; former Prime Minister of Poland, Jan Krzysztof Bielecki; Pat Cloherty, Chairman of the US Russia Investment Fund; Henry M. Paulson Jr., United States Secretary of the Treasury, former Chairman and CEO, Goldman Sachs; Leonard A. Lauder, Chairman of the Estée Lauder Companies, Inc.; James Kelly, Managing Editor, Time, Inc.; Craig Newmark, Founder, Craigslist; professors from the University of Pennsylvania including the Wharton School and the Graduate School of Education; Morehouse College's Leadership Center; and the Center for Creative Leadership. In addition, more than 65 leaders from Goldman Sachs around the world have imparted their time and expertise as faculty.
Alumni Activities: All Global Leaders are given the opportunity to participate in various alumni activities. For example, students have access to an on-line learning curriculum in leadership development created by Harvard Business School. They also have an opportunity to submit a proposal to the program's Social Entrepreneurship Fund for seed funding of projects that address critical local, regional and national issues such as poverty, health and education.
Social Entrepreneurship Fund: All Global Leaders may apply for seed funding for projects that encourage social entrepreneurship and continued development of leadership opportunities. Funded projects to date have assisted with the creation of a community school in India, stopping the spread of Malaria in Africa, and providing scholarships for orphans afflicted with AIDS in Thailand.
Global Leaders Continue to Win Recognition: Global Leaders have gone on to win Rhodes, Truman, Marshall, Gates and Cambridge scholarships and Fulbright Fellowships.
