- Citizens of a Sub-Saharan African country
- Graduate students, researchers or artists in a program at an accredited U.S. university, cultural or artistic institution (on a F or J visa)
- Applicants with specialization in the humanities or social sciences

Grantees must be currently enrolled at an accredited U.S. university.
What is included?
The winner(s) receive an award to defray educational costs for one academic year, renewable for a second year based on satisfactory academic performance and continued need. The award amount ranges anywhere from $10,000 to $17,000 depending on market performance. The funds may be used to cover thesis research, tuition, living costs, etc. The amount of the award depends on the funds available from the investment performance of the endowment.
