WASHINGTON, DC—More than 1,200 first-year Fulbright foreign students from over 80 countries, studying at hundreds of U.S. colleges and universities, will participate in one of nine seminars in cities across the United States between December 2012 and May 2013, hosted by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
The seminars focus on current global topics, including the following themes: “Climate Change and the Environment”; “U.S. History and Diversity”; “Democracy and Human Rights”; and “Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation.”
Fulbright Enrichment Seminars are being held in New Orleans, Louisiana (Dec. 13-16), Atlanta, Georgia (Jan. 31-Feb. 3), Phoenix, Arizona (Feb. 7-10), Providence, Rhode Island (Feb. 21-24), St. Louis, Missouri (March 7-10), Washington, DC (March 13-17), Portland, Oregon (April 4-7), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (April 18-21), and Minneapolis, Minnesota (May 2-5).
During the four-day seminars, participants will engage with U.S. experts, local citizens, community leaders, and fellow Fulbright foreign students studying in the United States. The students will gain a better understanding of contemporary U.S. life and culture, policy formulation, and public attitudes on issues of national and global importance. In addition to the seminars, they will participate in site visits and workshops, as well as community outreach and volunteer opportunities to explore how Americans develop solutions to challenging problems in their communities.
Fulbright Enrichment Seminar participants will also have the opportunity to interact with members of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, the 12-member board appointed by the President of the United States to establish worldwide Fulbright program policies.
The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs sponsors the Fulbright Enrichment Seminar series as part of its flagship Fulbright Program. These enrichment seminars, an integral part of the Fulbright experience, benefit Fulbright foreign students and support the Fulbright Program’s mission—to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through academic exchange.
