2005 International Awards Gala

On September 19, 2005, over 400 leaders in business, education, public policy, media, philanthropy and the arts assembled at The Pierre hotel in New York for the Institute of International Education’s 2005 International Awards Gala.  Renée Fleming, international opera star, and Alberto Vitale, honorary chairman of Random House, both Fulbright alumni, served as Fulbright co-chairs for the Gala.

IIE presented Goldman Sachs and its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Henry M. Paulson, Jr. with its Opening Minds Corporate Leadership Award, in recognition of the firm’s outstanding commitment to corporate social responsibility around the world. 

IIE also presented its Fritz Redlich Alumni Award to four dynamic young social entrepreneurs from the U.S. and China who are alumni of the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program, supported by the Goldman Sachs Foundation and administered by the Institute of International Education. The four alumni developed a groundbreaking program, Technology Education Connecting Cultures (TECC), to combat poverty and advance education in China through technology. Students from leading campuses throughout the U.S. and China joined in this effort, which was launched with a grant from The Goldman Sachs Foundation’s Social Entrepreneurship Fund.
