The talk will be given by Mr. Tyrone Parker, an American civil rights activist and the founder and Executive Director of the Alliance of Concerned Men (ACM) and participant in the 1963 “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom” with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

About the Speaker
The Alliance of Concerned Men is an award-winning non-profit organization whose goal is to save the lives of at-risk youth residing in high crime areas of the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Since 1991, ACM has been providing community services to families and children at risk and in crisis throughout the Washington metropolitan area.
Tyrone Parker has also served on the staff of the DC Housing Authority, in the DC Department of Corrections, and as a volunteer mentor with several youth agencies. Mr. Parker has testified on juvenile justice before Congress, including on the subject of expanding opportunities for community and neighborhood partnerships and on the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns.
Mr. Parker has been the recipient of many prestigious awards and accolades. His tremendous accomplishments with the Alliance has garnered him international notoriety.
Mr. Parker has been featured in documentary films including Across the River, on major television programs in the United States, Japan, Canada, England and Australia, as well as on the front pages of the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Chicago Herald. His organization was featured in U.S. News & World Report and Reader’s Digest magazines for its powerful impact on the lives of young men and women in the Washington, DC metropolitan communities. He was selected Washingtonian of the Year in 2004 by Washingtonian Magazine.
Background of the Event
In June 2013, the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) hosted 12 emerging young leaders from around the globe for a three week seminar to explore ways to empower young people as change agents. While in Washington, DC, the young international leaders, including Mr. Stanislav Sereda from Ukraine, met with Mr. Tyrone Parker, President of the Alliance of Concerned Men.
During the meeting, Mr. Parker shared his impressive personal story, passion for his work and powerful impact on the lives of young women and men in Washington. Mr. Sereda was so impressed by Mr. Parker that when he returned home, he immediately asked the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv to invite Mr. Parker to Ukraine. As a result, the U.S. Embassy has invited Mr. Parker on a special tour and speaking engagement beginning August 26, in recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington, a major event in the American Civil Rights Movement.
Mr. Parker’s visit to Ukraine expands the impact of this IVLP-sparked encounter. In Kyiv, invitees include representatives of Ukrainian community organizations, Fulbright fellows, as well as IVLP alumni from the recent project for Ukraine “Public Interest Law: Affecting Social Change and Ensuring Quality Legal Aid”. IIE Ukraine has been working closely with the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv to arrange this roundtable discussion.
