STA Travel Joins Generation Study Abroad

NEW YORK, March 5, 2015—The Institute of International Education (IIE) is pleased to announce STA Travel as the official travel provider of the Generation Study Abroad initiative. IIE’s Generation Study Abroad initiative is a five-year campaign to mobilize resources and commitment partners with the goal of doubling the number of U.S. students studying abroad by the end of the decade.

STA Travel will make a contribution to the IIE Study Abroad Fund for each trip booked through STA by students from Generation Study Abroad commitment partner institutions. In addition to contributing funding for scholarships to the IIE Study Abroad Fund, other commitments by STA Travel include providing sponsorship support and promotion of IIE’s Generation Study Abroad initiative, as well as added travel benefits for commitment partner institutions in order to make travel and study abroad more affordable for students.

STA Travel has more than 35 years of experience as the student and youth travel expert, enabling students and young adults to explore the world by creating experiences filled with adventure, discovery and personal growth. IIE’s Generation Study Abroad initiative and STA Travel have a shared mission in enabling and inspiring U.S. students to pursue educational experiences overseas.

Currently, fewer than 10% of college students in the United States study abroad before they graduate. IIE’s Generation Study Abroad initiative urges partners to work not only on increasing the numbers but also on changing the perception of study abroad so that all students enter college with the expectation of having an international experience before they graduate.

“Study abroad is no longer a luxury, but rather one of the most important components of a 21st-century education. Globalization brings with it the demand for a U.S. workforce with knowledge of other countries and cultures. STA Travel will play an important role in supporting the Generation Study Abroad Initiative,” said Institute of International Education President and Chief Executive Officer, Allan E. Goodman.

“We’re thrilled to be the official travel provider of the Generation Study Abroad initiative. STA Travel has supported the international education community in the U.S. for many years and we’re excited to see the increased activity and promotion around study abroad. We look forward to working closely with the many commitment partners to support the overall goals of Generation Study Abroad,” said STA Travel Senior Vice President for North America, Adam Cooper.
