In both China and the United States, Alcoa Foundation is supporting the (SMART) New Mobility Solutions project. SMART (Sustainable Mobility & Accessibility Research & Transformation) is a university-wide initiative housed at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) and Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. The goal of SMART is to develop and apply integrated and practical solutions to the challenges of sustainable transportation in an increasingly complex and urbanizing world.
The focus cities, Beijing and Detroit, are two very different places with different problems, strengths and cultures. The challenge of this project is to understand and apply whole systems approaches and innovations that provide more connected and sustainable transportation options and to allow the residents of the Beijing and Detroit regions to move seamlessly from door to door, with the help of a range of transportation modes and services, and new telecommunications and vehicle technologies. The aim is not only to support sustainable community solutions to mobility and accessibility in Beijing and Detroit, but also to learn lessons that might be applied in other regions around the world. It will also explore new business models and green job opportunities related to the emerging global new mobility industry that will supply the sustainable future of transportation.
