Junior Justice Professional Training Program (JJPTP)

JJPTP selects 21 young justice professionals with leadership potential and provides them with a short-term, U.S. based professional training experience. The program focuses on best practices in U.S. law enforcement and judicial review.

Candidates are drawn from among the young cadre of Bulgarian judges, prosecutors, and attorneys with the goal of selecting 7 judges, 7 prosecutors, and 7 attorneys who are committed to implementing and applying the lessons from their U.S. training to their jobs in Bulgaria. During the first half of June 2016, the selected participants take part in a two weeks JJPTP training in the USA.

The program is made possible by the generosity of the America for Bulgaria Foundation (ABF) and is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE). The selected participants for the program in 2016 are:

  • Stoyan Mihov – Sofia Regional Court
  • Diana Mitzkanoca – Regional Prosecution Office – Pleven
  • Atanas Punev – Sofia Bar Association
  • Galya Ruseva – Regional Court – Yambol
  • Ivan Stefanov – Sofia Regional Prosecution Office
  • Aneliya Tatarova – Law firm ‘Tatarova’
  • Vanya Teneva – Regional Court – Kazanlak
  • Todor Todorov – Law firm ‘Kamburov and partners’
  • Miroslava Chifchieva – Regional Prosecution Office – Pernik
  • Plamen Shumkov – Regional Court - Vratsa
  • Applicants must be Bulgarian citizens who currently work and reside in Bulgaria.
  • Applicants must be prosecutors, judges or attorneys.
  • Applicants must have no more than 10 years of relevant professional experience as judges, prosecutors or attorneys.
  • Applicants have strong motivation and must be committed to building a strong and independent Bulgarian judiciary and improving the professional standards of the Bulgarian justice officials.

Selected applicants from the justice sector will spend 14 days of training in USA, covering:

  • Transportation to and from USA, as well as domestic flights in the USA;
  • Hotel accommodations; Group meals and per diem allowance;
  • Ground transportation during the meetings;
  • Insurance;
  • Translation in Bulgarian/English during the actual program in the USA;
  • Training manuals and education materials
