What’s ahead in 2022

At IIE, we understand the value of research and evaluation to inform international education and development issues. Our team has been busy at work planning for the coming year and here is just a sampling of what we are working on for you:

  • COVID-19 and international educational exchange: We will continue to inform the field on the short- and long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on international academic mobility. Whether through our signature Open Doors project, Project Atlas, or the COVID-19 Snapshot Survey Series, insights from our publications provide cutting edge data on how COVID-19 is impacting the international education field.
  • We are all learning: At a time of reflection two years into the pandemic, we at IIE are planning a report on our organization’s reflections on the pandemic. Following up on our excellent report on initial COVID-19 actions from the IIENetwork, this year’s report will share perspectives from IIE colleagues administering programs amid COVID-19, from emergency response to program design.
  • One experience does not fit all: Our team is also looking at the diverse experiences of individuals and institutions in international exchange programs. Whether it’s looking at international students with disabilities, U.S. study abroad for first-time college goers, or international mobility at historically black colleges and universities, these insights speak to the need to analyze international education through various lenses. Look out for us to address these issues and more in upcoming pieces this year.
  • Measuring impact: International education, and its intersection with other fields of public health, climate change, and social justice, has come under a microscope in the past two years. Our team continues to be at the forefront of measuring the impact of international scholarship and leadership programs, while looking at how to influence programming and policy in critical times.

Making our research and insights available to you

Our focus is on research and evaluation work that has integrity while being action-oriented to move the needle forward. We are learning about effective ways to share our findings, from podcasts to data blogs, for an audience that needs answers fast. Our commitment is to explore new ways to data and findings, particularly through this page, and get you the information you need as quickly as possible.

Reflecting on our role as researchers and evaluators

Finally, we wouldn’t have the “L” in our name if we did not take some time to reflect on our own role in this work. This year, one of our goals as a team is to think more deeply about how we approach our work as researchers and evaluators, how we position ourselves in our work, and what we can do to better make our approaches, analyses, and insights inclusive. We hope to share some of these insights with you as well.
