Workshop: The Career Connection: Aligning Study Abroad with Career Readiness

Studying abroad changes students—but can they articulate how it prepares them for their careers? This workshop equips international educators with research-based strategies and practical tools to intentionally embed career readiness throughout the study abroad life cycle. Bringing together researchers and experienced practitioners, you’ll explore evidence on the career impact of global learning, examine how to design programs that integrate career competencies across predeparture, on-site, and reentry phases, and develop concrete approaches to help students translate international experiences into professional skills that employers value. Meeting the growing global demand for engineers with international experience, the IIE Global Engineering Education Exchange (IIE Global E3) connects top engineering universities across the world through a dynamic consortium model. Students can study abroad while continuing to pay their home institution’s tuition, making global mobility more accessible and affordable. With 70 member universities spanning more than 20 countries, the program welcomes approximately 250–300 participants each year. Boren Awards are an initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO). The Boren Awards provide scholarships and fellowships focusing on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.

The Gilman Program supports American students to gain career skills and global networks that further their professional development and the U.S. economy. The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program (Gilman Program) provides up to $5,000 in merit-based scholarships to outstanding American undergraduate students with high financial need to pursue credit-bearing academic studies and career-oriented internships abroad. These opportunities equip Gilman Scholars with international experience, global networks, and foreign language skills essential to advancing the U.S. economic competitiveness and national security.

IIE leverages its extensive networks and deep global experience to deliver expert services to sponsors and partners throughout the region. Program offerings are wide-ranging and serve a variety of development needs in the region. IIE is currently working on initiatives in a variety of program areas in more than 13 countries, including the KAUST Gifted Student Program (KGSP) and capacity-building initiatives in partnership with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In partnership with the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT), IIE created KORUS, a series of experiential learning activities for groups of Korean students studying abroad in the U.S. to give them firsthand exposure to international collaboration and professional pathways in STEM. To date, we have led 20+ student visits to top U.S. tech and research hubs – with 7 more taking place in the spring.

IIE’s Scholar Rescue Fund is the only global program that arranges, co-funds, and supports fellowships for threatened and displaced scholars at higher education institutions worldwide, including inside their home regions. Institutions and professionals may host an IIE‑SRF fellow through a yearlong, often renewable visiting academic position; support scholars’ professional development by offering conference access, memberships, training, mentorship, or career resources; refer at‑risk academic colleagues for consideration; and financially contribute to sustain lifesaving fellowships. Together, these partnerships enable scholars to continue their teaching and research in safety while enriching host institutions and the global academic community.
