Washington, DC—From March 13-17, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, in coordination with the Institute of International Education (IIE), will host a Fulbright Enrichment Seminar in Washington, DC, for approximately 130 first-year Fulbright Foreign Students from more than 70 countries.
Seminar participants will explore the theme, “Democracy and Human Rights: Civic Activism and the Media,” examining the important role that activism plays in advancing social issues in the United States through the usage of media. Fulbright Foreign Students will also donate their time and skills to assist a variety of local organizations through community service projects.
The four-day seminar will feature keynote speakers, panel discussions, community service events, and visits to key sites in Washington, DC. Reporters are invited to attend the panel session and to speak with experts, current Fulbright Foreign Students, Fulbright U.S. Student alumni seminar participants, a member of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, and the keynote speaker, Frank Smith. Local reporters are also invited to interview selected Fulbright Foreign Students attending Washington, DC, area colleges and universities.

THURSDAY, MARCH 14
The keynote address by Frank Smith, Director, African American Civil War Memorial and Museum from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
A panel discussion entitled Freedom of Assembly – Civil Action, Past and Present from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

- Emily Martin, Vice President and General Counsel, National Women’s Law Center
- Mossi Tull, Vice President, Washington, DC Branch, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
- Brent A. Wilkes, Executive Director, League of United Latin American Citizens
FRIDAY, MARCH 15
- Community service activities involving Fulbright Foreign Students assisting with: beautification of the Crossway campus, community gardening, meal preparation, working with children in the Crossway Montessori Programs, supporting the Family Leadership Academy and/or events held in the Intergenerational Learning Center with Crossway Community; removing invasive plants and replacing them with native plants at the Heurich Park in Hyatsville, MD, through the Anacostia Watershed Society; hosting a Pancake Breakfast with residents of So Others Might Eat; visiting Carroll Manor residents and participating with them in recreational activities from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The Washington, DC Fulbright Enrichment Seminar is one of nine enrichment seminars hosted across the United States by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs as part of its flagship Fulbright Program.
