Why

IIE will host a gala to recognize leaders in International Education and support IIE.

  • Chrysler Group LLC and Sergio Marchionne, Chairman & CEO, will be awarded the Opening Minds Corporate Leadership Award, in recognition of philanthropic leadership and commitment to empowering people and communities, as well as talent sustainability and job readiness. This includes focusing on IIE and Chrysler’s shared commitments to supporting STEM education, as well as broader support for post-secondary level professional development scholarships, including business, design, engineering, finance, manufacturing and supply chain management programs.

The Opening Minds Corporate Leadership Award recognizes corporations whose business activities promote international understanding and improve the lives of people in the communities in which they work. Past honorees include: Praxair (2013); Western Union (2012); Microsoft (2010); ExxonMobil (2009); Alcoa (2008); AIG (2007); Toyota (2006); Goldman Sachs (2005); and GE (2004).

  • Shawn Carter Foundation and Ms. Gloria Carter, Co-Founder & CEO, will be awarded the inaugural Generation Study Abroad Award, to recognize the outstanding contributions that the Shawn Carter Foundation has made in partnership with IIE and the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program to launch the Shawn Carter-Gilman International Scholarships. These scholarships increase access to higher education for underserved students and provide opportunities for these students to study abroad as a critical part of expanding their horizons as they prepare for successful careers.

The Generation Study Abroad Award recognizes individuals and organizations that encourage purposeful,  innovative action to get more Americans to undertake an international experience by supporting IIE’s “Generation Study Abroad,” a 5-year initiative to double the number of U.S. students studying abroad by the end of the decade.

  • Assistant Secretary of State Evan Ryan leads the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. In this capacity, she oversees a wide range of academic, cultural, private sector, professional, youth, and sports exchange programs to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries and promote peaceful relations. Department of State exchange programs engage youth, students, educators, artists, athletes, and emerging leaders in more than 160 countries and in the United States.

About the Shawn Carter Foundation

The Shawn Carter Foundation was established by Shawn “JAY Z” Carter and his mother, Gloria Carter, who serves as the Foundation’s CEO.  The foundation’s mission is to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships further their education at institutions of higher learning. By removing some of the financial burdens associated with going to, surviving in, and graduating from college/post-secondary institutions, the SCF plays a vital role in increasing college access and success for many motivated yet underserved youth and young adults. The SCF issues individual grants directly to institutions of higher education on behalf of selected first-time undergraduate college and vocational school students between the ages of 18-25, to cover tuition and related supplemental educational expenses. SCF is also working to increase the ways in which it can expand and strengthen its scope of work around education, economic advancement and service.
