WASHINGTON, July 27th, 2015—The U.S. Department of State, in partnership with the Institute of International Education (IIE), will welcome 41 government officials and higher education administrators from 18 countries to the United States for the EducationUSA Leadership Institutes on July 28th, 2015. The participants include: Mohamed Aboussalah, Secretary General of Higher Education for Morocco’s Ministry of Higher Education; Kostyantyn Kyrychenko, Deputy Vice Rector of Sumy State University in Ukraine; and Reiko Aoki, Professor & Executive Vice President of Kyushu University in Japan.
These Leadership Institutes are a new initiative designed to increase understanding of U.S. higher education and to provide a unique opportunity for representatives from the United States and participating countries to cultivate a globally competent workforce. Education is one of the United States’ top exports, with a trade surplus of $20.7 billion, according to the most recent Top Markets Report from the Department of Commerce.
During the three Leadership Institutes, participants will complete academic residencies and explore topics such as the internationalization of graduate education, industry-private sector linkages, and student mobility. Each cohort will be made up of 12 to 16 foreign government officials and higher education administrators who were nominated by U.S. embassies abroad.
The three institutes will be held at the following U.S. partner organizations:
- Saint Louis University will host the Campus Internationalization: U.S. Graduate Education Leadership Institute in Saint Louis, MO and will provide 16 participants with insight into the process of graduate student admission in the United States and the establishment and maintenance of international research collaborations.
- StudyColorado will host the Industry-Private Sector Linkages & Innovation: Energy Sector Partnerships Leadership Institute in Denver, CO will provide 12 participants with an opportunity to explore the collaboration between higher education and the energy sector, while focusing on workforce development, research and development, and curricular reform.
- The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will host the Campus Internationalization: Institutional Structures to Support Inbound and Outbound Student Mobility Leadership Institute in Champaign, IL will advise 14 participants on building capacity in sending domestic students overseas and receiving foreign students for short-term study and full degree programs.
The EducationUSA Leadership Institutes are a component of the State Department’s EducationUSA network of hundreds of advising centers around the world that provide prospective international students with accurate, current, and comprehensive information about U.S. higher education while supporting U.S. colleges’ and universities’ international student recruitment efforts.
