March 1, 2016 – The U.S. Department of State, in partnership with the Institute of International Education (IIE), will welcome 44 government officials and higher education administrators from 24 countries to the United States for the EducationUSA Leadership Institutes on March 1st, 2016.
These institutes provide a unique opportunity for representatives from the United States and participating countries to increase their understanding of U.S. higher education and cultivate a globally competent workforce. Education is one of the United States’ top exports, with international students contributing $30.5 billion to the U.S. economy, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
During the three Leadership Institutes, participants will complete academic residencies and explore topics such as U.S. graduate education, industry-private sector linkages, and student mobility. Each cohort will be made up of 14 or 15 foreign government officials and higher education administrators who were nominated by U.S. embassies abroad.
The three institutes will be held at the following U.S. partner organizations:
- Portland State University will host the U.S. Graduate Education: Organization and Internationalization Leadership Institute in Portland, OR and will provide 15 participants with insight into the structure and organization of graduate programs in the United States and focus on the establishment and maintenance of international research collaborations.
- Case Western Reserve University will host the U.S. Higher Education and Industry-Private Sector Linkages Leadership Institute in Cleveland, OH to provide 15 participants with an opportunity to explore the engagement between higher education and the private sector, including research collaboration, curriculum development, and workforce preparedness.
- GlobalPittsburgh will host the Campus Internationalization: Structures that Support Student Mobility Leadership Institute in Pittsburgh, PA to advise 14 participants on building capacity in sending domestic students overseas and receiving foreign students for short-term study and full degree programs. The Leadership Institute will also include topics such as alumni engagement and quality assurance and accreditation in the U.S.
The EducationUSA Leadership Institutes are a component of the State Department’s EducationUSA network of hundreds of advising centers around the world that provide prospective international students with accurate, current, and comprehensive information about U.S. higher education while supporting U.S. colleges’ and universities’ international student recruitment efforts.
