IIE, IOHE to Expand Academic Collaboration

NEW YORK, September 28, 2016 — The Institute of International Education (IIE) is now an associated member of the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE), an academic network with a membership of more than 300 higher education institutions and organizations throughout the Americas. Part of its efforts to expand academic exchange opportunities between universities in Latin America and the United States, IIE finalized the partnership in meetings at the IIE Washington Forum with Dr. Allan Cahoon, President of the IOHE, and Dr. David Julien, Executive Director of IOHE.

An organization with a global network of more than 1,400 member higher education institutions, IIE is now the 33rd signatory member of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of the Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE), whereas the IOHE acts as the CAIE Executive Secretariat. IIE’s new partnership with IOHE will expand relationship-building and collaboration opportunities among members of both organizations’ networks.

“The alliance formed between IOHE and IIE is another manifestation of the increased alliances with our US members and partners, and it shows how important research and mobility are on the IOHE agenda”, said Dr. Julien, Executive Director of IOHE.

“Building the academic and professional skills of current and future leaders throughout the Western Hemisphere is vital to economic growth across borders,” said Allan Goodman, the President and CEO of IIE. “Through our new alliance with IOHE and existing programs, the Institute of International Education aspires to expand educational opportunities for and promote mutual understanding between future leaders throughout the Americas.”

IIE has worked with more than 3,000 higher education institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean, Canada, and the United States, including its ongoing IIE Cuba Higher Education Initiative and International Academic Partnership Programs in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and the U.S. IIE provides access to educational and experiential learning opportunities for talented students, faculty, administrators and trainees from all sectors in the Americas and around the world through scholarship, fellowship and training programs funded by governments, foundations and corporations. IIE has a network of 19 offices, including New York City, Washington DC, Chicago, Denver, Houston, San Francisco and Mexico City. An independent, not-for-profit organization founded in 1919, IIE’s global network includes 7,000 professionals at over 1,400 member institutions.

The IOHE is distinguished by 36 years of experience, during which it has gathered more than 350 members coming from 27 countries of the Americas, as well as other strategic partners in Asia and Europe. Through its training programs and its inter-American and intercultural activities, IOHE contributes to the implementation of the innovative strategies in the field of post-secondary and higher education in the continent.

Thus, taking actions of global reach, both entities will keep working on the enhancement of higher education in the Americas.
