Announcing the IIE-SRF Alliance, a Global Partnership Initiative

NEW YORK, August 27, 2020 — The Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) is excited to announce the launch of a new global partnership initiative, the IIE-SRF Alliance. The Alliance will strengthen IIE’s century-long efforts to save the lives and work of threatened and displaced scholars.

The COVID-19 pandemic and entrenched crises like climate change, poverty, and systemic racism have reinforced the essential role that scholars play in addressing the world’s most urgent problems. Yet the threats facing academics today are unprecedented in both scale and complexity. Now more than ever, IIE is committed to saving the lives and careers of scholars across the globe who are vulnerable to conflict and repression. IIE-SRF, the only global program that arranges and funds fellowships for threatened and displaced scholars at partnering institutions worldwide, helps to address this critical need.

The Alliance builds upon IIE-SRF’s current global network of partners who offer practical support to scholars in need, including temporary academic positions, professional development and career advancement opportunities, and other critical assistance. It facilitates information-sharing and collaboration between IIE-SRF and its partners and provides the opportunity for Alliance partners to utilize IIE-SRF resources and expertise. IIE-SRF welcomes individuals, institutions, and organizations from across the higher education, scientific, non-profit, corporate, and governmental sectors to join the Alliance.

“The sad lesson of history is that academics are targeted in every war and have always faced persecution for their research, activism, and ideas. That is certainly true today, and the world will lose a great deal if we fail to act to save their lives and voices. I am confident that the IIE-SRF Alliance, as a global and multi-sectoral partnership initiative, will make a significant impact in ensuring that the unprecedented number of threatened and displaced scholars are offered safe haven and opportunities to continue their scholarly work,” says IIE President and CEO Dr. Allan Goodman.
