Research Field FAQs

  • How do I know if my area of research is eligible?
  • I am in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Am I eligible?
  • I am in a non-Ph.D. doctoral program (e.g., Ed.D.). Are other doctorate-level degrees eligible, or are the CCSP Fellowships limited to Ph.D. students only?
  • I don’t see my area of study/research listed. Can I still apply?

Q. How do I know if my area of research is eligible?

A. Students working on doctoral level research in the arts, education, humanities, and social sciences with a focus on China are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will be in communication with key faculty at the institution where they plan to pursue research. This is to ensure that applicants’ research interests are compatible, and that the resources at the host institution in China will be sufficient to support recipients’ research needs. Applicants who have questions regarding the eligibility of their research should contact Steven Dale, the Program Officer for the CCSP Fellowships, by emailing sdale@iie.org.

Q. I am in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Am I eligible?

A. Applicants should familiarize themselves with the research areas supported by this fellowship. The CCSP award is mainly meant to support students conducting research in the arts, education, humanities, and social sciences. As such, STEM fields are not generally supported.

Q. I plan to apply to the Research Ph.D. Fellowship, but I am in a non-Ph.D. doctoral program (e.g., Ed.D.). Are other doctorate-level degrees eligible, or is the CCSP Fellowship limited to Ph.D. students only?

A. Other doctoral degrees are eligible, not just the Ph.D. Please read through the eligibility criteria.

Q. I don’t see my area of study/research listed. Can I still apply?

A. The information on eligible research areas is meant to provide a general overview of the types of topics that fall within the scope of the fellowship. However, it is not a comprehensive list of all eligible topics. It is important that applicants have a clear research agenda before applying, and that they communicate with the faculty at the host institution in order to ensure compatibility, and to secure the required invitation letter. Applicants who are unclear on whether their field of study is eligible, please contact the CCSP Fellowships Program Officer by emailing the Steven Dale, the Program Officer, at sdale@iie.org.
