The Ocean Futures Fellowship: Building Ocean Career Pathways

Overview

The Ocean Futures Fellowship empowers the next generation of ocean professionals, equipping them to address pressing ocean challenges while strengthening their own career pathways. Through training, educational projects, professional development and mentorship over a six-month full-time program, Fellows will gain advanced skills, hands-on experience, and draw on OceanX’s international connections that not only build their career, but foster ocean literacy and leadership on a global scale.

The Fellowship program contributes to the goals of the UN Ocean Decade and SDG 14 by cultivating the next generation of ocean leaders who will drive innovation, inspire global audiences, and expand ocean literacy to foster ocean protection.

Fellows receive a stipend and are fully remote. The program includes the potential opportunity to travel on board the OceanXplorer vessel.

Focus

This cohort will prioritize fellowship applicants with demonstrated experience and/or strong interest in one or more of the following areas as well as knowledge and interest in AI literacy and applying emerging technologies responsibly and effectively.

Role Summary:

In this role, the Ocean Futures Fellow – AI will collaborate with OceanX team members across data, science, education, and communications to design, build, and improve AI-enabled workflows that advance OceanX’s mission: bringing impactful ocean exploration, discovery, and conservation stories to the world—and accelerating the ability of ocean science to generate insight from complex data.

This Fellowship is intentionally designed to support Scientific AI R&D, with a focus on developing and/or applying models that can jointly reason across multiple modalities relevant to ocean science—such as imagery, acoustics, 3D seafloor mapping/bathymetry, sequenced eDNA, and chemical and physical water property measurements—to support research, discovery, and scientific understanding.

This role requires flexibility, adaptability, curiosity, and the ability to successfully navigate shifting agendas, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-moving, cross-functional environment. You will learn alongside a supportive team that is committed to sharing knowledge, providing guidance, and helping each other succeed.

Essential Functions:

  • Cross-Functional Scientific Collaboration: Partner with scientists, engineers, and expedition teams to translate scientific needs into applied ML problems and to translate model outputs into actionable scientific insight.
  • Multimodal Model Development: Develop and/or apply models that jointly reason across multiple ocean-relevant modalities, including (but not limited to) visual data, acoustic data, 3D bathymetry/seafloor mapping, sequenced eDNA, and chemical/physical water properties.
  • Model Training Experience: Design training approaches and run experiments, including dataset preparation, training pipelines, and iterative model development.
  • Data & Dataset Development: Support curation, cleaning, labeling, and dataset design across disparate sensor types and scientific workflows; collaborate with domain experts to ensure scientific validity and utility.
  • Experimentation & Validation: Define evaluation protocols and benchmarks to assess model performance, generalization, and robustness; communicate results clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.

Role Summary:

In this role, the Ocean Futures Fellow – Digital Correspondent will utilize their passion for ocean science and conservation and/or ocean literacy to collaborate with OceanX team members to synthesize OceanX scientific discoveries, research, and learnings in a succinct and digestible way. This position will play a supporting role in communicating to the general public to raise awareness of ocean conservation and the innovative work OceanX is undertaking. The Digital Correspondent position maintains an internal database and partners with the team to raise awareness of OceanX’s work and programs by utilizing digital media to create engaging and dynamic content. This role requires flexibility, adaptability, curiosity and the ability to successfully navigate shifting agendas, priorities, and deadlines.

Essential Functions:

  • Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development training to develop and expand understanding of ocean literacy principles, ocean leadership, and public speaking skills.
  • Communicating Science: Translate complex findings and learnings from OceanX scientific expeditions and research into understandable, digestible and dynamic format.
  • Public Engagement: Design engaging digital content utilizing innovative formats to educate the public about OceanX, ocean exploration, and conservation.
  • Database Management: Update and archive OceanX media
  • Capstone Project: Complete a capstone project in digital production focused on ocean literacy to be completed by end of fellowship.

Role Summary:

In this role, the Ocean Futures Fellow – Digital Asset & Archives will support OceanX’s media, science, and production teams by organizing, maintaining, and enhancing access to OceanX’s growing media archive. The Fellow will work closely with internal stakeholders to ensure that video, photography, and associated metadata are accurately cataloged, searchable, and prepared for long-term preservation and future storytelling, licensing, and educational use.

Essential Functions:

  • Digital Asset Management & Archiving: Support the ingestion, organization, cataloging, and maintenance of OceanX media assets, including video, stills, audio, and documentation.
  • Metadata & Taxonomy Support: Assist in applying consistent metadata standards, keywords, and descriptive information.
  • Media Operations Support: Collaborate with teams to track assets across projects and expeditions.
  • Archive Readiness & Preservation: Help identify documentation, rights, and technical gaps.
  • Capstone Project: Complete a capstone project focused on digital asset management or archival organization.
  • Professional Development: Participate in training focused on ocean literacy and media workflows.

Role Summary:

In this position, the Ocean Futures Fellow – Immersive Media supports both the OceanX Education and OceanX Singapore teams in their efforts to create innovative programming and content that furthers the goals of OceanX to increase ocean literacy. In this role, the Fellow will draw on their passion, creativity and experience with ocean science and conservation and/or ocean literacy to develop dynamic content for immersive media, events, and public programming.

The Fellow will also explore and apply emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), to enhance storytelling, learning design, audience engagement, and content development across OceanX platforms.

Essential Functions:

  • Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development training to develop and expand understanding of ocean literacy principles, ocean leadership, and public speaking skills.
  • Content Development: Utilize experience, creativity and passion for ocean conservation and literacy to support OceanX Education’s team, partners, and developers to create immersive media initiatives for variety of external stakeholders Leverage AI-enabled tools (e.g., generative media, text, image, video, or audio tools) to support ideation, prototyping, content iteration, and learning asset development while adhering to OceanX ethical and brand standards.
  • Design Process Experience: Support teams with a focus on user interface and experience. Assist in experimenting with AI-supported design workflows, such as rapid prototyping, audience testing, accessibility enhancements, and personalized learning experiences.
  • Project Management: In coordination with OceanX teams, manage and lead effective programs and content development across multiple projects. Track and document AI use cases, workflows, and lessons learned to support scalable and responsible integration of emerging technologies.
  • Public Programming: Collaborate closely with OceanX Singapore team to plan, develop, and deliver innovative public programming and emergent projects. Support the integration of interactive and AI-enhanced elements into public programming, exhibitions, and live or hybrid experiences where appropriate.
  • Capstone Project: Complete a capstone project in digital production focused on ocean literacy to be completed by end of fellowship.

Role Summary:

In this role, the Ocean Futures Fellow – Marketing & Communications will support OceanX’s MarComms team in planning, creating, and executing strategic campaigns and communications initiatives that advance ocean science, exploration, and conservation. This Fellow will gain hands-on experience across multiple marketing functions including content creation, campaign coordination, digital communications, CRM management, and cross-functional project support.

This role provides exposure to strategic planning, storytelling, and audience engagement across diverse channels and stakeholders—from scientists and educators to partners and the public. The Fellow will work on projects that directly support OceanX’s mission to explore the ocean and inspire global action for its protection.

This position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, adaptability, and comfort working across teams, time zones, and evolving priorities in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development training to develop and expand understanding of ocean literacy principles, ocean leadership, and public speaking skills.
  • Campaign & Content Support: Assist with the development and execution of integrated marketing campaigns, including messaging frameworks, content planning, and asset coordination across email, social, web, and events.
  • Copywriting & Storytelling: Draft and adapt copy for multiple channels and formats, including emails, web pages, social media, event materials, and internal communications, in alignment with OceanX’s brand voice and narrative.
  • Email Segmentation: Support contact segmentation in email platform (Customer.io) to enable targeted, audience-specific communications.
  • Analytics & Performance Tracking: Monitor and analyze performance metrics across social media, email, and website channels to identify trends, insights, and optimization opportunities; support reporting and data-informed decision-making.
  • Process & Operations Support: Assist with project management, project tracking, documentation, and operational workflows.
  • Capstone Project: Complete a capstone project in MarComms focused on ocean literacy to be completed by end of fellowship.

Role Summary:

In this role, the Ocean Futures Fellow – Partnerships will work closely with OceanX’s Partnerships team across New York and Singapore to support the establishment and continuation of relationships with potential partners. In this role, the Fellow will support the full lifecycle of partnerships and fundraising efforts, including prospect research, proposal and presentation development, CRM and pipeline management, and coordination of partner engagement activities and events. This role provides exposure to senior leadership and external partners across OceanX, while offering the opportunity to work on projects that have a tangible impact on OceanX’s mission and growth.

This position requires strong organizational and communication skills, sound judgment, comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to manage multiple workstreams in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Partnerships & Fundraising Development: Support the preparation of proposals, presentations, and briefing materials for current and prospective partners.
  • Donor & Partner Research: Conduct in-depth research on prospective and existing funders and partners to inform outreach, strategy, and relationship management.
  • CRM & Pipeline Management: Maintain and update CRM records for current and prospective partners and donors, ensuring accurate tracking of relationships, activities, and opportunities.
  • Process & Infrastructure Support: Assist with the coordination and refinement of internal processes, procedures, and documentation for the Partnerships pillar.
  • Event & Engagement Coordination: Support planning and execution of partner-facing meetings, convenings, and events, including preparation of materials and follow-up.
  • Capstone Project: Complete a capstone project focused on partnerships, fundraising strategy, or relationship development, to be completed by the end of the fellowship.
  • Professional Development: Participate in professional development opportunities focused on fundraising, partnerships, nonprofit development, ocean literacy, and leadership.

Program Timeline, Location, and Support

Estimated Timeline

  • March 24, 2026: Application Opens

  • Mid-May 2026: Candidate Interviews
  • Late May 2026: Announcement of Fellowship Offers
  • June 22, 2026: Start of Fellowship & Onboarding
  • December 2026: End of Fellowship

Location

Fellows will work remotely from their home countries throughout the six-month fellowship period.  Fellows will be expected to participate in virtual professional development training and meetings with OceanX Education staff and faculty throughout the fellowship. In addition, Fellows must commit to attend meetings and collaborate with OceanX team members during Singapore business hours (SGT) for the duration of the six-month fellowship. Note, the Marketing and Communications Fellow has flexibility to work either SGT business hours or New York (ET) business hours for the duration of the six-month fellowship. This will be determined based on the location of the Marketing and Communications Fellow.

Stipend

Fellows will receive a monthly stipend to support their full-time participation in the program. This stipend does not include additional allowances for housing, relocation, transportation, dependents, or other personal expenses. A technology stipend is available for select Fellows on a case-by-case basis.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Authorized to work in one’s country of residence.
  • Able to commit full‑time from June 2026 to December 2026.
  • Demonstrated experience and/or strong interest related to one of the following roles: 1) AI, 2) Digital Correspondent, 3) Digital Asset Archives, 4) Immersive Media, 5) Marketing and Communications; or 6) Partnerships.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution prior to the start of the fellowship
    • Individuals applying for Partnerships Fellow must have a degree in finance, policy, science, nonprofit management, media, communications, business, or other related fields.
    • Individuals applying for Immersive Media Fellow or Digital Correspondent Fellow must have a degree in ocean science, ocean conservation, media, communications, or other related fields.
  • Full professional proficiency in English (C2-level or equivalent)
  • Practical knowledge and interest in AI literacy and applying emerging technologies responsibly and effectively
  • Motivated by purpose, access, mentorship, and global opportunity.
