About

What is the Whitaker International Program?

The Whitaker International Program sent approximately 400 emerging leaders in U.S. biomedical engineering (or bioengineering) oversees to undertake a self-designed project that enhanced their careers. Along with supporting grant projects in an academic setting, the Whitaker International Program encouraged grantees to engage in policy work and propose projects in an industry setting.

What is the Whitaker Foundation?

From 1975 until 2006, The Whitaker Foundation supported the development and enhancement of biomedical engineering (BME) in the United States, contributing nearly $700 million to universities. When they closed, The Whitaker Foundation committed its remaining funds to the Institute of International Education to create the Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program, with the goal of enhancing international collaborative ties between the emerging leaders in the U.S. BME community and their counterparts abroad.
