Less than one week after the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, IIE launched a coordinated, organization-wide Afghanistan Crisis Response, leveraging programs already in place to deploy assistance for students, scholars, and artists. Since the Taliban banned women from accessing higher education in Afghanistan on December 20th, 2022, IIE’s matrix of signature programs is even more critical to support female students and scholars through its Afghanistan Crisis Response efforts.
IIE initiatives such as the Scholar Rescue Fund and Emergency Student Fund are aimed at helping save lives and preserve knowledge wherever they are under threat:
IIE’s Scholar Rescue Fund is the only global program that arranges and funds fellowships for threatened and displaced scholars at partnering higher education institutions worldwide. At the heart of IIE-SRF is the idea that each scholar we support is a beacon of hope in our world.
The Emergency Student Fund provides grants to international college students in the U.S. when war or other crises such as natural disasters threaten their education. We are a critical resource for students in crisis when they have no other safety net.
IIE also created a new scholarship program for students of the now-closed American University of Afghanistan. An initial 13 scholarships are a promise of safety for students who, among hundreds of others, were given the assurance of evacuation. At once, a difficult situation became life-threatening when the evacuation was aborted. With these scholarships, students can reconnect to their studies in safety at a college campus abroad. The scholarships provide the hope and possibility that one day the students will return to Afghanistan and contribute to rebuilding their country. IIE will also work to help every student who wishes to leave find a place to go.
Protection and access to higher education can be the difference between life and death for these individuals, their communities, and their countries when they need us most.
Please join us in helping to save lives and preserve knowledge by supporting the students and scholars under threat in Afghanistan with a contribution to IIE’s Afghanistan Crisis Response.
IIE is grateful for the generous support of our partners, including the Duolingo English Test, the Henry Luce Foundation, Inc., the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Whiting Foundation, and many more friends of IIE.
I want to support IIE:
