PRESTASI III is administered by IIE on behalf of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). It is made possible with the support from the American people and by USAID. The Institute of International Education manages the program through its office in Washington, DC, in coordination with the Indonesian International Education Foundation (IIEF) in Jakarta.

USAID, the American government's lead foreign assistance agency, provides a range of education training opportunities for Indonesians. The breadth of U.S.-supported education programs is reflective of the deep ties and close collaboration between the two nations, which was further elevated by the Strategic Partnership that was affirmed by U.S. President Barack Obama and Indonesian President Joko Widodo in 2015. Under this Partnership, the two presidents agreed that education would be a top priority. Since 1950, USAID and its predecessor agencies have provided scholarships to U.S. universities for more than 4,000 Indonesians and non-degree training to tens of thousands of Indonesians.
