Transatlantic Collaborations: Exploring U.S.-European Partnerships with EducationUSA

This EducationUSA-hosted session will explore partnership opportunities between US and European universities to foster student mobility across the Atlantic. A panel of higher education professionals will share strategies for building effective collaborations that address common challenges in program implementation and internationalization. With cost as a key barrier, strategic partnerships offer mutually beneficial solutions, expanding global engagement and facilitating student exchange.

2:00 – 3:00 p.m. CEST | 2025 Transatlantic Mobility in Higher Education and Research Report Launch

This session will introduce Transatlantic Mobility in Higher Education and Research: A Cornerstone of Transatlantic Relations, a joint report by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Institute of International Education (IIE). Based on insights from high-level EU-U.S. stakeholder roundtables convened since 2023, the report examines key trends in transatlantic academic mobility. It underscores the vital role of exchange programs in strengthening economic, cultural, political and social ties between the United States and Europe. Panellists will present highlights and key findings from the report. They will emphasize the urgent need to sustain and expand these programs to ensure continued transatlantic cooperation in an era of global transformation.

This session explores localized European partnerships and sustainable support models for displaced scholars, highlighting the Institute of International Education Scholar Rescue Fund’s regional and national collaborations. Featuring Finland’s government–university cooperation and a multilateral initiative with the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung, the discussion will present scalable solutions for hosting and empowering scholars within Europe.

Fresh Data on Evolving International Partnerships: Exploring a 2025 IIE Survey

This session marks the first presentation of detailed results from a major new survey on international partnerships. The survey explores the motivations, locations, activities, challenges, management processes, and conceptual assumptions that shape the partnership portfolios of higher education institutions. Participants will explore how this information relates to their own institutions and what it reveals about the evolving partnership landscape more generally.
