Applications for awards to support summer programs will open in early February 2016, and applications for awards to support fall and academic year programs will open in late February 2016. Please be aware of the following deadlines:

Applicants must make sure that the electronic endorsements from their Study Abroad Advisers and Financial Aid Advisers have been completed and submitted to IIE by the date of the Adviser Deadline for the specific cycle. IIE must receive both adviser endorsements by the Adviser Deadline for applications to be considered complete. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Study Abroad Advisers and Financial Aid Advisers may set earlier campus deadlines for submission of the Freeman-ASIA Applications. Thus, applicants should contact their advisers about specific campus deadlines before proceeding with the Freeman-ASIA Applications.

Application Instructions

This page provides detailed instructions for completing the Freeman-ASIA scholarship application for summer 2016. It is important that you read this information carefully in order to understand the application requirements and procedures.

The summer 2016 student application deadline is March 1st, 2016

Potential applicants should:

  1. Review the Freeman-ASIA eligibility requirements to ensure they meet all the requirements to apply.
  2. Identify a Study Abroad Program in East or Southeast Asia that qualifies them for a Freeman-ASIA Award. Please note, the program must be approved by the host institution.
  3. Meet with their campus Study Abroad Advisers and Financial Aid Advisers to obtain support for their Freeman-ASIA Application.
  4. Study Abroad Advisers will submit an endorsement of the proposed study abroad program.
  5. Financial Aid Advisers will submit a certification of the financial need for the student to participate on the program.
  6. Complete the on-line Freeman-ASIA Application by the student deadline.
  7. Follow up with their Study Abroad and Financial Aid Advisers to ensure that both advisers have received their Freeman-ASIA application certification and endorsement request E-mail.
  8. Check with their Study Abroad and Financial Aid Advisers to ensure that their endorsement and certification, which are required components of the application, have been submitted to IIE by the adviser deadline. All endorsements must be submitted online through the online application portal.
  9. Submit the online summer 2016 program application by March 1, 2016, and ensure advisers submit their endorsements for summer program applications by March 8, 2016.

Completing the Freeman-ASIA Application

To be considered for an award, all applicants must submit an application via Embark. When you register your Embark account, you will receive an email confirming your registration. Please read the Embark application instructions carefully as you navigate the application. In addition, please be aware of the following details and requirements:

  1. The Freeman-ASIA application does NOT require academic recommendation letters, nor are such letters accepted. However, you application must be certified by both your Study Abroad Adviser and Financial Aid Adviser.
  2. You must register your Study Abroad and Financial Aid Advisers using the recommendations portal of the Embark application. However, please note that they will not be submitting academic recommendations, but are reviewing specific sections of your application for accuracy and completeness. Both advisers will be able to view your entire application.
  3. Your Study Abroad Adviser will be reviewing the information you have provided about your study abroad program, and will input corrections to your responses if necessary before endorsing your application.
  4. Your Financial Aid Adviser will be reviewing the information you have provided about your financial aid status and needs, and will input corrections to your responses if necessary before certifying your application.
  5. If your Study Abroad and Financial Aid Adviser are the same individual, please use the dual adviser option in the Embark application. Do NOT submit two separate registrations.
  6. You are required to upload in PDF form an unofficial transcript from your current institution, as well as unofficial transcripts from any prior institutions you have attended since high school.
  7. No hard copy materials are required as part of the Freeman-ASIA application; the application is completed entirely online.

Applicants must ensure that the electronic endorsements from their Study Abroad Adviser and the certification from the Financial Aid Adviser have been completed and submitted to IIE by the date of the Adviser Deadline for the specific cycle. For the application to be complete, IIE must receive both verifications by the adviser deadline. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Study Abroad and Financial Aid Advisers may set early campus submission deadlines. Thus, applicants should contact their advisers for campus-specific instructions before proceeding with the Freeman-ASIA Application.

All applicants will be notified of award decisions via e-mail within 5 - 7 weeks of the application deadline. Nominees will need to complete and submit additional paperwork to confirm their financial need and participation in their study abroad program.

Apply now for a Freeman-ASIA scholarship for summer 2016

Preference will be given to students who:

  • Participate in language study that will enhance their ability to engage with the host culture.
  • Enroll in a study abroad program with at least 20 hours per week of class time, incorporating the study of an East or Southeast Asian language, culture, and history.
  • Participate in a study abroad programs taught by host country faculty members.
  • Demonstrate sincere interest in incorporating East or Southeast Asian Studies into future academic and/or professional plans.

The three primary criteria used to evaluate Freeman-ASIA Award applications are:

  • Financial need
  • Commitment to and demonstrated interest in East or Southeast Asian Studies
  • Quality of the service project proposal
