About

WeTech is a consortium of dedicated partners that is led by the Institute of International Education (IIE) to design and support innovative activities to provide training, build networks and offer professional opportunities. WeTech helps women and girls enter and succeed in technology careers, with the goal of enhancing women’s talent and skills needed to fuel technological and economic growth. Launched at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in 2013, WeTech has engaged with 27 companies, 200 mentors, 50 schools and universities, and 5,000 girls in 18 countries to date.

WeTech works with a range of partners to build a healthy pipeline of girls and women in tech fields by linking them to opportunities that will inspire, engage and support them for entrance and success in high-paying tech careers. Program activities include:

  • Building a path for young girls to strengthen their scientific and mathematics skills through hands-on engineering projects.
  • Designing an innovative, hands-on afterschool program for secondary school girls in India, providing them with experience developing mobile apps, communication skills, connecting them with mentors, offering skills workshops, field trips and networking with role models.
  • Establishing a network of young women studying engineering and related fields in China, India, Taiwan, South Korea and the United States and building a support system for them including mentoring, scholarships, internships and leadership development.

Across Asia:

In India, WeTech supports the Afterschool Program for the last three years where high school girls learn how to build mobile applications and compete in a world-wide competition to pitch their ideas on a global stage.

In China, India, Taiwan and South Korea WeTech manages a scholarship program for young university women in the STEM fields and couples the funding with internships or mentorships with leading tech companies. You can read more about the impact of this program on IIE’s Opening Minds blog.

In the United States:

WeTech partners with Qualcomm to offer Qcamp for Girls in STEM, a summer program that teaches girls valuable technical skills and prepares them for careers in STEM.

Through WeTech, Juniper Networks provides scholarships to current female STEM students as well as an internship opportunity at their offices in California or Bangalore, India.

Throughout Africa:

WeTech has worked previously with organizations and individuals in 16 countries across Africa to support computer science education for girls and women via the Seed Fund for Girls + Women in Computer Science in Africa.
