In 2014, Chile hosted over 3,754 international students who had no prior residence in Chile. The top five places of origin in 2014 were Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil and Bolivia.


Definitions

Inbound/International Student: Students who arrive in Chile (crossing a border) with the specific intention of studying at a Chilean higher education institution

Foreign Student: Individuals who immigrate to Chile for any other reason and then decide to study in Chile’s higher education system. Foreign students are not reflected in the Project Atlas data.

Private HEI: All institutions created after 1981, are not created by law, and are not derived from existing institutions before that year.
