Sub-Saharan Africa

The Institute of International Education (IIE) has had a presence in Sub-Saharan Africa that spans over 30 years, and implements a range of programs to build leadership capacity and expand access to higher education in the region.

Overview

With its office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and extensive history working in the region, IIE has a strong set of programs in leadership development, organizational effectiveness, and higher education scholarship administration. IIE has been a pioneer in providing both short- and long-term training to Africans. From 1979-2001, the South Africa Education Program opened the doors for black South Africans to obtain the knowledge, skills and professional credentials required to succeed in a post-apartheid government.

Services

Empowering Women and Girls

IIE’s HER program provides young women in secondary school from under-served communities with a pathway to university. A pilot project in Ethiopia, HER will provide 100 girls entering the 11th grade with scholarship support combined with innovative leadership and life skills training to help them complete their secondary education and equip them with the tools needed to continue on to university.

Leadership Development

IIE custom designs comprehensive leadership programs for organizations and groups. All training use cutting edge experiential learning techniques including visioning, dialogue, and strategic planning on key areas of concern to IIE that foster team effectiveness, improved interpersonal and communication skills, and thoughtful succession plans.

Scholarship Management

IIE is uniquely qualified to administer all aspects of scholarship and exchange programs, including recruitment, selection, academic placement, orientation, student monitoring, grant management, and alumni activities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Study Tours and Experience Sharing

IIE designs and delivers high-quality study tours to expose participants working in the public, private and non-profit sectors to best practices in their fields.

Capacity Building

In a rapidly changing world, the demand for the delivery of quality policies, programs and services from governments and civil society is high. In order to achieve the kind of change required to meet development goals in Africa, including the Millennium Development Goals, there is a strong desire among key stakeholders for a greater capacity to meet performance expectations. Government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community groups seek tools for organizational development so that they are better able to promote societal transformation.

IIE believes in a holistic approach to organizational transformation and our approach is to engage participatory processes in the design of capacity development programs. This approach not only ensures ownership of the evolving process, but models the kind of leadership that is required for transformation.

Programs are designed with the following outcomes in mind:

  • Stronger teams are built within the organization and collaborative relationships are established with other partners.
  • Organizations have new tools to help them assess their organizations and plan more strategically.
  • Building on their strengths, organizations have identified and have developed initiatives to transform their organizations.
  • Systems for organizational management are strengthened and more effective.
  • There are plans for succession not only for CEOs but for all participants to ensure continuity of their work on a day-to-day basis.
  • Organizations are committed to and have plans for sustaining their learning and initiatives and build a culture of effectiveness into their organization.
